, unfortunately, unfolding in connecticut right now. in newtown, connecticut, at a small elementary school. the sandy hook elementary school. for those of you who are just tuning in, we are now getting numbers, our own john king reporting, quoting law enforcement sources as saying at least 20, but perhaps closer to 30 individuals, many of them children, have been killed in this incident. individual suspect, a 20-year-old, is -- the suspect, the shooter is a 20-year-old. law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation telling our susan candiotti, that suspect, we believe, is dead right now. you just heard police at a small briefing, didn't provide a lot of information, but they did tell us the area now appears to be secure, but this has been a horrific, horrific mass killing at an elementary school in connecticut. a school for kids from kindergarten through fourth grade. we're watching all of this unfold. lisa procachini is on the phone right now. she's a parent of an 8-year-old at the school, the sandy hook elementary school. your 8-year-old is fine, i take it, lisa. tell us w

in newtown, connecticut. a search warrant is being conducted in hoboken, new jersey. that's where he lived. we know that shortly after 9:30 this morning, walked in to the mother's kindergarten classroom and opened fire. he killed her an he also killed at least 18 children. that's the latest. we'll continue right now. here are the latest developments this morning on the school shooting tragedy in connecticut. president obama will visit new town this evening to meet with the families and attend a vigil. they will fan out to gun stores and shooting ranges across connecticut looking for clues about the 20-year-old gunman who killed 26 children and adults in friday's rampage. he forced his way into the school breaking a window at the front entrance. he shot and killed a school principal and school psychologist who ran towards him too try to protect the children. surviving twins describe how their teachers save their lives. >>> went into my teacher's office, everyone was quiet. she saved a life. she called her husband and he called the police. when the policeman came to get us he told us to close our eyes like on the picture on the news do this. and run. >> just go out. >> the medical examiner told reporters all of the young victims had been shot numerous times. as this tragedy unfolds stay with abc 7 news for continuing coverage. we are going to hear about some of the heros who helped save li

high after 20 children were murdered in newtown, connecticut. the president, congress and we the people all want to do something constructive to make sure this horror doesn't happen again. the problem, it will happen again no matter what we do. that doesn't mean we should do nothing. however, before acting, let's take a look at the facts. mass shootings in the usa are on the decline. according to criminologist from the minute money department of corrections, mass murder in america was most severe in 1929. in recent years, there were 32 mass killings in the 1980s, 42 in 9 '90s and 26s in the first decade of this century. according to the department of justice, murders of school age children have declined by 42% in the past 15 years. the latest stats show 1% of the murdered kids died at school. now, that's not to diminish the horrible crimes we have seen in connecticut and other places recently. all americans should understand that violence like that harms america's image throughout the world and we do have a gun culture here. no question about it. if the feds can tighten up gun laws with
